Solomon Dunning Wheat, Co. H

Wheat, age 27 (left photo), enrolled Sept. 14, 1861, at Callicoon Depot to serve three years and was mustered in as a corporal Oct. 3, 1861. He was promoted to sergeant Aug. 15, 1862, and to first sergeant (no date), and was commissioned a second lieutenant June 6, 1863. He was promoted to first lieutenant May 18, 1864, and was mustered out March 31, 1865. A newspaper clipping from the time of his death states he was wounded at the Battle of Pocataligo, S.C. (not listed in regimental records, but probably one of the engagements of December 1864). There, he was shot in the leg, and then through the neck while dragging his way to the rear. The 60 days it took him to recover marked the only period during his service that he was not present for duty. Once healed, he returned to the lines for the duration of the war.

Wheat's brothers Jedediah and James S. also served in Co. H.

Wheat, the grandson of an Ulster County Militiaman who served in the Revolution,  was born July 9, 1834, at Fremont Centre, Sullivan County, and died June 13, 1916. He is buried in Franklin, N.Y., in the Soldiers Plot at Ouleout Cemetery. The photo above right was taken when he was 79.  Photos above and below provided through kind courtesy of Solomon Wheat's great-great-grandniece, Joan (Wheat) Field.

Grave marker of Solomon D. Wheat's brother, James. S. (Co. H), Evergreen Cemetery, Kingsley, Mich. James S. Wheat (the regimental history erroneously gives his middle initial as "L") was 26 when he enlisted March 24, 1864, at Cochecton, N.Y. He was mustered in as a private March 30, 1864, and was mustered out Oct. 17, 1865, at Charleston, S.C. He died July 19, 1910, in Kingsley, Mich.
