Company "K"

 

1st Lt. Isaac Jelliff, Co. K

Jelliff, age 23, enrolled Sept. 21, 1861, at Neversink, N.Y., to serve three years and was mustered into Co. K on Oct. 10, 1861. He was discharged Feb. 17, 1862, at Washington, D.C., and transferred to the 143rd N.Y. Infantry (see photo below of Jelliff taken while he served in the 143rd N.Y.) . Note the 20th Corps badge, of which the 143rd was part, on Jelliff's kepi. On Jelliff's left sleeve at the elbow you can plainly see a black mourning band with ribbon, likely worn as a tribute to the recently assassinated President Abraham Lincoln. This dates the image to April or May 1865. 

 

1st Lt. Eliphas Smith, Co. K

Smith, 20, enrolled Sept. 11, 1861, at Monticello to serve three years. He was mustered in as second lieutenant of the company Oct. 10, 1861, and was promoted to first lieutenant Feb. 6, 1862. He was made captain Feb. 27, 1862, and transferred to Co. I on April 15, 1863. He was promoted to major Feb. 18, 1864, and was mustered out with the regiment at Charleston, S.C., on Oct. 17, 1865. He was promoted to lieutenant colonel (not mustered) Sept. 29, 1865.

 

Arthur Childs Co. K

Childs, age 18, enlisted Oct. 25, 1861, at Neversink as a private. He was mustered into Co. K on Oct. 25, 1861, and was discharged for promotion Feb. 16, 1863, at St. Helena Island, S.C. Wilbur F. Hudler, Co. K

Hudler, age 18, enlisted Sept. 23, 1861, at Monticello to serve three years. He was mustered in as a private Oct. 10, 1861. He reenlisted as a veteran February 21, 1864. He was mustered out at Charleston, S.C., on Oct. 17, 1865. Carte-de-visite by A. Wurtz Tice, Ellenville, N.Y. 

 

Edwin L. Rose, Co. K

Rose, age 18, enlisted at Monticello to serve three years, and mustered in as a private Oct. 18, 1861; reenlisted as a veteran Feb. 21, 1864; promoted to corporal (no date); returned to ranks Dec. 21, 1864; promoted to corporal August 1865; mustered out with company Oct. 17, 1865, at Charleston, S.C. Rose's coat appears to be a waterproof one of painted or rubberized cloth. Carte-de-visite photograph by Sam A.
