

Wright H. Auchmoody
Auchmoody, 29, enlisted Aug. 17, 1861, at Monticello to serve three years, and was mustered in as a sergeant in Co. I on Sept. 3, 1861. He was promoted to first sergeant April 11, 1862, and was commissioned second lieutenant Nov. 25,, 1863. He was wounded in action Nov. 30 and Dec. 2, 1864, at the Battle of Honey Hill, S.C. He was mustered out June 30, 1865, at Charleston, S.C. Auchmoody (also borne as Aughmoody) was court-martialed for neglect in 1864 for, among other things, allowing a private to serve on guard duty with an inch of sand in the barrel of his musket; see Wrong side of the law: Courts-martial in the 56th page.

Pvt. John De Sylva, Co. I
De Sylva enlisted in 1861 in one of the Tenth Legion cavalry companies that eventually became Co. D, 1st N.Y. Mounted Rifles. He transferred to Co. I, 56th N.Y. Volunteers, as a private Jan. 21, 1862, and was discharged for disability July 15, 1862. De Sylva had a brother, De Wight, who also had served in Co. D, 1st N.Y. Mounted Rifles, before transferring to the 56th as a musician who later shouldered a musket in the ranks. De Wight, too, survived the war.

Charles Medlar (spelled "Medler" in regimental history), Co. I.
Medlar, age 21, enlisted at Monticello, N.Y., to serve three years. He was mustered in as a private Sept. 20, 1861. He was mustered out Sept. 27, 1864. Post-war carte-de-visite photograph taken by a relative, photographer J.S. Medlar, in Woodstock, Ill.

Henry B. Morris, Co. I
Morris, 26, enlisted at Monticello to serve three years and was mustered in as a private Sept. 11, 1861. He reenlisted as a veteran Feb. 20, 1864, and was mustered out Oct. 17, 1865, at Charleston, S.C. This photograph was taken in 1864 or 1865; note veteran's stripes on his coat sleeves. Pvt. William Robinson, Co. I
Robinson, age 19, enlisted at Monticello to serve three years. He was mustered in Sept. 17, 1861. He was promoted to corporal Nov. 11, 1862, and to sergeant Jan. 1, 1863. He reenlisted as a veteran Feb. 20, 1864, and was killed in action Nov. 30, 1864, at the Battle of Honey Hill, S.C. He was 22 years old. Tintype courtesy Bill Whisler.

Daniel R. Teller, Co. I
