Very rare photograph of unidentified Tenth Legion cavalryman c.1861 (do you know who he is?), a member of one of two cavalry companies attached to the regiment when it was formed. Those companies later were reassigned to the 1st N.Y. Mounted Rifles, where they became Companies C and D. Note yellow Tenth Legion crest on regulation cavalry  shell jacket (actual cavalry crests were orange) and crossed sabers insignia on dress hat. Trooper holds an infantry non-commissioned officer's sword -- a photographer's prop.

Moses W. Cartright, Tenth Legion cavalry

Cartright, 22, enlisted Sept. 3, 1861, at Monticello, N.Y., as a private. On Sept. 18, he was mustered into Co. D, 1st N.Y. Mounted Rifles. This company comprised troopers who had enlisted in one of two Tenth Legion cavalry companies. He was promoted to corporal Jan. 11, 1862, to sergeant May 6, 1862, to first sergeant July 15, 1862, to second lieutenant Dec. 16, 1862, and to first lieutenant May 9, 1863. He resigned his commission April 5, 1864. Carte-de-visite by unknown photographer, but likely Baird and Jessup, Middletown, N.Y.

Spectacular hand-tinted tintype of drummer in one of two light artillery companies originally attached to the Tenth Legion. These companies later became the 7th and 8th N.Y. Independent batteries. Notice red Tenth Legion "X" crest on jacket. Crests were issued in light blue for infantry, orange for cavalry, green for sharpshooters, and red for artillery. Image reproduced through kind permission of Bill Whisler.

Unidentified bandsman with saxhorn.

Though dark, you can just make out the Tenth Legion "X" crest on right side of coat, just above kepi. It likely was red, a color that didn't reproduce well using the photographic techniques of the day.

Unidentified drummer. The wreath on his kepi surrounds the number "56." (from the Michael McAfee collection)

Unidentified Tenth Legion Artillery member.  Notice the BD on his hat.
